DESCRIPTION:

Children with Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI) can improve their use of functional vision when they are provided with many opportunities to visually attend to meaningful activities. Educators and Therapists can play a key role in this by creating specific and purposeful adaptations to the routines children participate in on a daily basis.

Participants will learn about the following topics:
• The visual system and the effect of neurological injury on visual processing
• The ten visual characteristics associated with CVI, and the three phases of The CVI Range
• Modifying learning environments to suit the needs of children with CVI based on their CVI Range score
• Using salient visual features to help children use familiar concepts to process new images
• Approaches for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and literacy instruction
• Integrating CVI accommodations across disciplines as part of an interdisciplinary team
